What is the Affective Filter ?The affective filter is a theoretical construct in second language acquisition that attempts to explain the emotional variables associated with the success or failure of acquiring a second language. The affective filter is an invisible psychological filter that can either facilitate or hinder language production in a second language. When the affective filter is high, individuals may experience stress, anxiety, and lack of self-confidence that may inhibit success in acquiring a second language. On the other hand, a low affective filter facilitates risk-taking behavior in regards to practicing and learning a second language.Teachers of second language learners must strategically organize their environment and instruction in order to lower the affective filter of learners in their classroom. Over-emphasis on error correction, laughing at mistakes or being placed in awkward or high-risk environments may tend to increase the affective filter and inhibit language development. The optimal classroom for language learning and production is a classroom that encourages risk-taking in language production and views error as a natural progression of language learning. When placed in a safe and affiming environtment, many students will blossom and grow in their language development.
How it does affect the affective filter in grammar?First of all we can define grammar as the sounds and sound patterns or it can be also the basic units of meaning such as words and the rules to combine the to form new sentences constitute the grammar of an specific language.This rules also can be adapted or learned by native speakers.i have to mention an important point that almost many people see the grammar teaching is often seen as establishing the 'correct' way of speaking and writing. Secondly, with the communicative approach in which language is viewed as an instrument of communication, it has become clear in language teaching that grammar is viewed as a tool or resource to be used in conveying meaning and comprehending other people's messages.
I got to the conclusion as a teacher we have to make the class easier and interactive for our students, we have to implement all the technique that we know to rich the students learning.
